Exams are stressful enough without worrying about the language. Here are the common terms you will see on test papers.
1. Types of Questions
- Multiple Choice: Choose the correct answer from A, B, C, or D.
- True / False: Decide if a statement is correct or incorrect.
- Fill in the blanks: Write the missing word in the sentence.
- Essay Question: Write a long answer discussing a topic.
2. Common Instructions
What to do:
- Compare and Contrast: Discuss similarities and differences.
- Define: Give the meaning of a word.
- Summarize: Give a short version of the main points.
- Evaluate: Give your opinion on the value or importance of something.
3. Exam Rules
What the invigilator (exam supervisor) might say.
- "You have 2 hours to complete the exam."
- "No talking is allowed."
- "Please put your bags at the front of the room."
- "Pens down, please."
4. Preparation Vocabulary
- Revise / Review: To study what you have learned again.
- Cram: To study a lot in a short time just before the exam.
- Mock Exam: A practice test.
- Cheat Sheet: A paper with notes (usually not allowed!).
