Trying local food is one of the best parts of travel. Here is how to navigate a restaurant menu and order exactly what you want.

1. Arriving at the Restaurant

If you haven't booked, you need to ask for a table.

2. Ordering Food

Use "I would like" or "I'll have" instead of "I want."

Phrases:

  • "I'll have the chicken salad, please."
  • "I would like the steak, medium rare."
  • "What do you recommend?"
  • "Does this dish contain nuts/dairy?" (Important for allergies!)

3. During the Meal

Calling the waiter over.

4. Paying the Bill

In the US, it's "check." In the UK, it's "bill."

  • "Could we have the bill, please?"
  • "Do you accept credit cards?"
  • "Can we split the bill?" (Pay separately)
  • "Is service included?" (Asking about the tip)
