Trying local food is one of the best parts of travel. Here is how to navigate a restaurant menu and order exactly what you want.
1. Arriving at the Restaurant
If you haven't booked, you need to ask for a table.
- "Do you have a table for two?"
- "We have a reservation under the name Smith."
- "Could we sit outside/by the window?"
2. Ordering Food
Use "I would like" or "I'll have" instead of "I want."
Phrases:
- "I'll have the chicken salad, please."
- "I would like the steak, medium rare."
- "What do you recommend?"
- "Does this dish contain nuts/dairy?" (Important for allergies!)
3. During the Meal
Calling the waiter over.
- "Excuse me!" (Raise your hand slightly)
- "Could we have some more water, please?"
- "This isn't what I ordered." (Polite complaint)
4. Paying the Bill
In the US, it's "check." In the UK, it's "bill."
- "Could we have the bill, please?"
- "Do you accept credit cards?"
- "Can we split the bill?" (Pay separately)
- "Is service included?" (Asking about the tip)
