Photography is a universal language, but discussing technical settings requires specific English vocabulary. Whether you use a DSLR or a smartphone, these terms will help.
1. The Exposure Triangle
- Aperture (f-stop): The hole in the lens that lets light in. Controls depth of field (blur).
- Shutter Speed: How fast the camera takes the picture. Controls motion blur.
- ISO: The camera's sensitivity to light. High ISO can cause "noise" (grain).
2. Composition
Making it look good:
- Rule of Thirds: Placing the subject off-center for a better look.
- Leading Lines: Lines that guide the eye to the subject.
- Framing: Using objects (like trees) to create a frame around the subject.
- Perspective: The angle you shoot from (high angle, low angle).
3. Lighting Terms
Light is everything.
- Golden Hour: The hour after sunrise or before sunset (soft, warm light).
- Blue Hour: The time just before sunrise or after sunset.
- Overexposed: Too bright (too much light).
- Underexposed: Too dark (not enough light).
- Backlit: Light coming from behind the subject.
4. Equipment
- Tripod: A three-legged stand to hold the camera steady.
- Lens: The glass eye of the camera (Wide-angle, Telephoto, Macro).
- Flash: Artificial burst of light.
- Filter: Glass placed over the lens to change the image.
