In the High Courts and Supreme Court of India, English is the primary language of communication. Even in district courts, drafting and citations are often in English.

But "Legal English" (Legalese) is different from daily conversation. It requires precision, formality, and authority.

Courtroom Phrases

Addressing the Judge

"May it please your Lordship/Ladyship..."

"With due respect to the bench..."

Making an Argument

"It is my humble submission that..."

"I would like to draw the court's attention to..."

Disagreeing

"My learned friend is mistaken on this point..."

Simplifying for Clients

While you use complex English in court, you must use simple English with clients.

Don't Say (Legalese)

"We shall file a writ of mandamus pursuant to Article 226."

Do Say (Plain English)

"We will ask the High Court to order the government to do its duty."

Essential Legal Vocabulary

Plaintiff The person who files the case.
Defendant The person accused or sued.
Adjourn To pause the case for another date.
Affidavit A written statement confirmed by oath.
Litigation The process of taking legal action.
Pro Bono Legal work done for free for public good.
