How to Think in English: Stop Translating (2025)
Do you construct a sentence in Hindi/Tamil/Telugu first, and then translate it? That is why you get stuck. Here is how to fix it.
The biggest barrier to fluency isn't grammar. It's the Translation Lag.
The Wrong Way:
Thought (Hindi) -> Translate -> Grammar Check -> Speak (English).
Result: You speak slowly and sound unnatural.
The Right Way:
Thought (English) -> Speak (English).
Result: You speak fluently.
But how do you switch your brain's language? It takes practice, but it's possible.
3 Steps to Start Thinking in English
Level 1: Naming Objects
Look around your room right now. Don't say the Hindi names. Say the English names in your head.
"Table. Fan. Laptop. Water bottle. Window."
Do this for 2 minutes every day.
Level 2: Simple Sentences
Describe what you are doing in simple Subject-Verb-Object sentences.
"I am drinking water." "I am opening the door." "The bus is late."
Stop thinking "Main paani pee raha hoon". Just think "I am drinking water".
Level 3: Narrative Thinking
Plan your day in English.
"Okay, first I need to finish this report, then I will go for lunch. I hope the cafeteria has good food today."
The "Immersion" Technique
You can't think in English if you only hear Hindi all day. You need to surround yourself with English.
Change Phone Language
Set your phone and apps to English. Force your brain to read English constantly.
Listen to Podcasts
Listen to English podcasts while commuting. Let the sentence structures sink into your subconscious.
Speak to Yourself
Talk to yourself in the mirror. It sounds crazy, but it works wonders for confidence.
